Bio
Sukhminder Kaur Ubhi is an associate professor who has been working with Guru Nanak College of Nursing in Dhahan-Kaleran since 2017. She also serves as the school’s head of Medical Surgical Nursing. In addition, she teaches an array of subjects including nursing foundations, first aid, pharmacology, adult health nursing, geriatrics and community health.
As an aside to her role at Guru Nanak College of Nursing, she oversees final exams and papers under Baba Farid University of Health Sciences.
Sukhminder Kaur is passionate about nursing in that it allows her to make a positive impact on the lives of others on a daily basis. She says it fulfills her desire to “nurture, care and help others.”
As an encapsulation of her teaching career, her favourite quote is by Jack Welch, which states, “before you become a leader, success is all about growing yourself. After you become a leader, success is about growing others.”
She began her journey in nursing by completing her General Nurse Midwifery (GNM) diploma at Mohan Dai Oswal College of Nursing in Ludhiana, in 1989. She was immediately hired to work at the Mohandai Oswal Cancer Hospital as a staff nurse. She was later promoted to head nurse. As part of her duties, she worked in the intensive care unit (ICU), out-patient department (OPD), surgical ward and oncology department.
She continued studying for her Post Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) at the Christian Medical College of Nursing in Ludhiana, between 1996 to 1999.
Thereafter she worked as a nursing tutor at Guru Nanak College of Nursing in Dhahan-Kaleran, while also serving as the Deputy Nursing Superintendent at Guru Nanak Mission Hospital on the same campus, between 2000 to 2003.
Between 2003 and 2009, she took on the role of Vice Principal at Sandhu Institute of Nursing in Nawanshahr.
From 2009 to 2011 she completed her Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) at Gwalior Nursing College (GNC) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
She returned to work at Sandhu Institute of Nursing from 2011 to 2014. From 2015 to 2017, she resumed her role at Guru Nanak College of Nursing and Guru Nanak Mission Hospital in Dhahan-Kaleran.
Sukhminder Kaur has been recognized for her advisory role to the Student Nurses Association (SNA) and won a poster competition with the Trained Nurses’ Association of India (TNAI). She has been awarded certificates for attending SNA conferences and workshops, and has been a guest of honour at such.
