Bio
Dr. Surinder Jaspal has been a Professor Cum Principal at Guru Nanak College of Nursing in Dhahan-Kaleran, Punjab, since 2016.
She coordinates the subjects of maternal health, mental health and medical surgical nursing for the PhD program. She also teaches mental health nursing & research.
Dr. Jaspal believes that while theory provides important foundations for learning, it is practical experience with real-life situations that make success. Her teaching style is focused on developing problem-solving skills that encompass primary, secondary and tertiary care in nursing.
Dr. Jaspal completed her General Nursing Midwifery (GNM) diploma from Government Nursing College, Amritsar in 1976, which was affiliated to Punjab Nurses Registration Council (PNRC) in Mohali. That same year, she began working as a staff nurse at Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Amritsar until 1986.
During this time, she completed her master of philosophy (MPhil) in 1982 at Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar. She then studied for her Post Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PIGMER), in Chandigarh, from 1984 to 1986. At that time, the institution was affiliated to Panjab University in Chandigarh.
Between 1986 to 2003, she worked as a nursing tutor at Government Nursing College Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. Between 2005 to 2006, she was promoted to Associate Professor.
In 1989, she began her Master of Science in Nursing (MScN), specifically in mental health nursing, also at PIGMER. She received her master’s degree in 1991.
Dr. Jaspal continued to advance her education by working on a Phd in Social Sciences between 2000 and 2005, at Punjabi University, Patiala. There, she was awarded a university medal and recognized with distinction in eight subjects.
Dr. Jaspal also gained administrative and leadership experience while working as Registrar at the Punjab Nurses Registration Council (PNRC) in Chandigarh, between 2004 and 2005. That led to her Vice Principal and Professorship position at Sri Guru Ram Das College of Nursing, in Hoshiarpur, from 2006 to 2007.
She became the Vice Principal of Gian Sagar College Of Nursing, Ram Nagar, between 2007 to 2009, and continued on as Professor Cum Principal between 2009 and 2014.
Thereafter she was the Principal at Swami Gurbachan Lal (SGL) College of Nursing in Jalandhar, from September, 2014 to January, 2015. She was the Professor Cum Principal at Swift Institute of Nursing in Ghaggar Sarai from 2015 to 2016.
Dr. Jaspal is a life member of the Trained Nurses’ Association of India (TNAI), the Indian Society of Psychiatric Nurses (ISPN), the Nursing Research Society of India (NRSI) and the Indian Nursing Council (INC).
To further her professional development, she went on to achieve several accolades in the nursing field including:
- Acting as a member of the editorial board of Baba Farid University Nursing Journal (BFUNJ), since 2011
- Completing a Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) course on Administrative Skills and Latest Trends in Nursing Education, hosted by the Punjab Nurses Registration Council, Mohali, Punjab, on April 23, 2023
- Acting as a conference chairperson of a scientific session titled, “Technological Impact on Epidemiology and Healthcare,” hosted by Rayat-Bahra University, in Sahauran, Mohali, Punjab on February 2-3, 2018
- Attending a course by the World NCD Federation titled, “Role of Nurse Practitioner in Prevention and Management of NCD’s,” (i.e. non-communicable disease) hosted by the The National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE), Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), in Chandigarh on November 7, 2017
- Participating in a workshop titled, “An Effective Evaluation Method OSCE/OSPE,” hosted by the Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), at the DMCH College of Nursing Ludhiana, Punjab, on April 23, 2016
- Acting as a resource person at the 3rd Conference of the Indo Pacific Academy of Forensic Nursing Science, held at Govt Medical College, Rajindra Hospital, in Patiala, on August 1, 2015
- Completing a trainer’s training program titled, “Tuberculosis Care and Control in India,” hosted by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), held at MM College of Nursing in Mullana, Haryana, Punjab between September 1- 3, 2015
- Participated as a panelist for a discussion event titled, “Latest Trends in Nursing Education and Clinical Practice,” organized by Rattan Professional Education College, in Mohali, Punjab in October 2013
- Attended a conference titled, “Implications for Clinical Nursing Practice,” hosted by the Research Society of India, held at Rayat Bahra College of Nursing, Hoshiarpur, Punjab, in September 2013
- Attended a National Psychiatric Nursing Conference, hosted by the International Standards for Professional Nursing (ISPN®), held at Himalayan College of Nursing, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, in March 2012
- Attended XV annual conference titled, “Nursing Research Issues and Evidence Based Practices: Ensuring quality Client,” hosted by the Nursing Research Society of India (North Zone) at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) in Faridkot, Punjab, from November 17 – 19, 2011
